Established in the mid-1990s, “Midwife of the North” is a collaborative Nordplus network comprising 16 active partners across various countries, including Finland, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Sweden, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Greenland, Aaland, and the Faroe Islands. This overarching network plays a crucial role in fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange in the field of midwifery.

A central part of the network is the “How to Protect Normal Birth” project, financed by Nordplus from 2020 to 2023. This project involves interviews with 146 midwives across Nordic and Baltic countries and aims to explore midwives’ perspectives on normal birth in a hospital setting. The focus has been on understanding their experiences in promoting and protecting these concepts during clinical practice within hospital settings and how they define the term “Normal birth.”

Results related to the project have been presented at conferences in Finland, Denmark, and Greece. Today, we are expanding the project, also including the perspectives of student midwives and families.
