Midwife of the North is a Nordplus higher education network within the midwifery profession that was established in the middle of the 1990s. The network consists of 16 partners of which 13 are educational institutions and three are public hospitals from The Nordic and Baltic countries. The network aims to provide students, teachers, tutor exchange, curriculum development activities, and projects within midwifery care and development. The network contributes to the growth of midwifery as an independent profession and science. It supports the development of highly motivated and well-educated midwifery students and midwives with international skills. Courses and business-based training are organized within the network. The network acknowledges differences between countries, and students learn from each other by facing different perspectives of midwifery. Representatives from public hospitals are essential as they bring clinical discussions and support with practical views on theoretical questions. The network strengthens Nordic-Baltic collaboration in midwifery education by sharing and developing evidence-based midwifery practices and understanding the differences and similarities in the maternity services in the collaborating countries. The crisis of lack of professional personnel in healthcare also includes the field of midwifery.
Goals: Enhancing Educational Cooperation for a Socially Sustainable Future in healthcare by improving the transcultural competence of students and teachers and disseminating cultural understanding by sharing experiences and knowledge within midwifery. To develop and strengthen intercultural management and its impact on midwifery – facing the challenges within the lack of professional personnel in the Nordic and Baltic countries.
